Love Unbound

Illustration and Poster Design
Project Overview
This play poster, designed for William Shakespeare’s 1623 play "As You Like It," delves into themes of love and sexuality through the romantic entanglements of characters, notably the love between Rosalind and Orlando, and the fluidity of gender roles as Rosalind disguises herself as the male Ganymede, challenging traditional notions of attraction and identity.

Inspired by Mollie Murk’s 2024 adaptation, this poster balances playfulness with debauchery, featuring a diverse cast of women, transgender, and gender-nonconforming people. "As You Like It" is reimagined as a celebration of queer identity.

The watercolor illustrations emphasize the fairytale and forest settings, while the sans-serif, handwritten-style fonts complement the loose, whimsical design of the title and imagery. Themes of liberation and sexuality are highlighted in the hand-painted imagery in the bottom corner, showcasing two lovers in the Forest of Arden. The custom-painted typography with the catchline “Love Unbound” replaces the original title to reflect its non-traditional story.

"As You Like It" will be performed at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, California, whose Beaux-Arts facade aligns with the original French setting and the progressive spirit of California.
